Petit moineau
Origin:
Canada,Quebec
Description:
Early variety with determinate growth and regular foliage, small round red fruit the size of a currant.
An extremely productive and vigorous variety. Grows well in pots as well as in the ground. It can also be used as a rootstock (although nowadays, better options are available).
The favorite tomato of children!
Children love to eat it raw. Personally, I prefer it cooked, in a roasted chicken or in Tomato Gnocchi
Rating out of 10 (taste):I would say 6/10(7 after being baked), my 4-year-old son would rate it 16/10...
Growing tips:
The Petit moineau tomato is particularly robust, growing well in pots as well as in the ground. An easy tomato to grow (but takes a long time to harvest). It can also be used as a rootstock (although nowadays, better options are available).
Petit moineau as rootstock: our opinion
The variety Petit moineau is often highlighted as a good rootstock for tomatoes. In reality, even though this very vigorous variety can indeed be used for grafting, we recommend usingrootstocks specifically developed for this purpose, such as the hybridsRadar F1.
These modern rootstocks fully benefit from the heterosis effect, which gives them a remarkable vigor, enhanced resistance, as well as steady and powerful growth. For a reliable, durable, and high-performing graft, they remain the most effective solution.
That said, we fully respect the viewpoint of those who do not wish to use F1, or who simply want to practice at a lower cost before moving on to professional rootstocks. In this case, Petit Moineau can be an alternative, as long as one keeps in mind that it will not quite offer the performance of specialized hybrids.
