Petit moineau jaune
Origin:
Unknown
Description:
Heritage tomato resulting from crossing wild tomatoes. The Petit moineau jaune tomatois an extremely sturdy and productive plant. It produces countless clusters bearing small yellow cherries.
In terms of taste, it's not amazing.... Thick skin and rather acidic flesh. (we much prefer the Little sparrow)
Sturdy plant that will make a good reproducible rootstock (much better and easier to graft than the little sparrow)
Feel free to read our article on tomato grafting.
Rating out of 10 (taste): 5/10
Cultivation tips:
Easy to grow tomato, a robust and vigorous variety that grows well in pots as well as in the ground.
Little Sparrow as rootstock: our opinion
The variety Little Sparrow is often highlighted as a good rootstock for tomatoes. In reality, even though this very vigorous variety can indeed be used for grafting, we recommend using rootstocks specifically developed for this purpose, such as the hybridsRadar F1.
These modern rootstocks fully benefit from the heterosis effect, which gives them an exceptional vigor, enhanced resistance, as well as consistent and powerful growth. For a reliable, durable, and high-performing graft, they remain the most effective solution.
That said, we fully respect the viewpoint of those who do not wish to use varieties F1, or who simply want to practice at a lower cost before moving on to professional rootstocks. In this case, Petit Moineau can be an alternative, as long as one keeps in mind that it will not quite offer the performance of specialized hybrids.
